Janina is an older woman in a remote Polish village who teaches English, studies astrology and loves animals more than most of her neighbors. When local hunters start turning up dead, she is convinced the animals are responsible, and nobody listens to her. It is a mystery, a dark comedy and a case for taking the dismissed seriously, from a Nobel laureate with a very sharp eye for small-town power.
Where This Book Lives
Pass. Adult shelf; murders, animal killing and an unreliable narrator. The book was a target of right-wing pushback in Poland, and Tokarczuk received threats after her 2019 Nobel win. No documented author concerns. Close relatives: The Year of the Hare, The Man Who Spoke Snakish and Small Gods (suggested 10-14).

I Am Not a Witch(2017)
dir. Rungano Nyoni
Same themes: Community, Courage
A child is tagged a witch. Tourists take photos.
In a Zambian village, an eight-year-old girl is accused of witchcraft after a small incident and sent to a government-run witch camp, where the women are tied to spools of white ribbon so they can't fly away. She is made a tourist attraction and a courtroom tool. A deadpan satire from a Zambian-Welsh director about how belief becomes an industry.
Why it’s here: It's what a society does to someone who is made a spectacle. What's punk is the dry comedy of bureaucracy and tourism turning a child into an exhibit. What's pedagogical is the question it leaves: who benefits from the story? Pairs with Things Fall Apart, The Famished Road and Satanic Verses (suggested 10-22). Note: dark comedy, with a child at the center and no easy rescue; Nyoni drew on real witch camps in Ghana. English, Bemba and Nyanja with subtitles.

Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare)(2016)
dir. Gianfranco Rosi
Same themes: Community, Courage
A boy plays on an island where migrants wash up.
On the Italian island of Lampedusa, a twelve-year-old boy learns to use a slingshot, a doctor treats seasick islanders, and a radio operator hears distress calls from boats in the Mediterranean. The film cuts between the island's daily life and the coast guard rescuing people from overloaded boats. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin.
Why it’s here: The film holds two worlds side by side and refuses to explain either: the island that goes on with its life, and the people who arrive. What's punk is the refusal of voiceover and the absence of a rescue narrative. What's pedagogical is that students can discuss what the camera chooses to look at. Companion to Exit West and Solito. Note: slow and quiet, with scenes of bodies from a rescue.
