Alicia is a history teacher in Buenos Aires in the final years of the junta, teaching official history to students who are starting to doubt it. She has an adopted daughter, a husband with government connections, and a growing suspicion about where the girl came from. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and it asks what a teacher owes the truth.
Why it’s here
It's a film about a teacher who finds out she has been teaching a lie. What's punk is how the household itself becomes the site of the dictatorship's crimes. What's pedagogical is the classroom, where a history teacher reads her own textbook with fresh eyes. Pairs with Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Lies My Teacher Told Me and Kiss of the Spider Woman (suggested today). Note: R-rated; torture is described and a domestic assault scene is shown; adults and mature teens. Spanish with subtitles.
