A poem for Black Americans, from the people who survived the Middle Passage to the athletes, artists and marchers who followed. Kwame Alexander's lines move between pride and grief, and Kadir Nelson's paintings fill the pages. It won the Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Honor, and is meant to be read aloud.
Where This Book Lives
Pass. Ages 4-8, with the text and the paintings carrying weight for older readers too. It names slavery and lynching plainly and briefly. It has been challenged in school libraries in Louisiana, and a librarian successfully defended it. Close relatives in the catalog: Hair Love and Last Stop on Market Street.

Bend It Like Beckham(2002)
dir. Gurinder Chadha
Same themes: Courage, Race and Identity
A Punjabi girl, a soccer ball, and a family wedding.
Jess is a British Punjabi eighteen-year-old in West London who plays soccer better than anyone in her park, and her parents want her to learn to cook a full Indian dinner. She joins a women's team behind their backs, falls for her coach, and has to find a way to be both daughters at once. It's a comedy with a wedding, an ugly sports bra and a lot of heart.
Why it’s here: The film makes a joke out of the fight between family expectations and a girl's ambition, and the girl wins on her own terms. What's punk is that Jess isn't asked to choose between her people and her game. What's pedagogical is how it handles racism, sexism and homophobia in a form a family can watch together. Pairs with Persepolis and Funny Boy.

Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare)(2016)
dir. Gianfranco Rosi
Same themes: Community, Courage
A boy plays on an island where migrants wash up.
On the Italian island of Lampedusa, a twelve-year-old boy learns to use a slingshot, a doctor treats seasick islanders, and a radio operator hears distress calls from boats in the Mediterranean. The film cuts between the island's daily life and the coast guard rescuing people from overloaded boats. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin.
Why it’s here: The film holds two worlds side by side and refuses to explain either: the island that goes on with its life, and the people who arrive. What's punk is the refusal of voiceover and the absence of a rescue narrative. What's pedagogical is that students can discuss what the camera chooses to look at. Companion to Exit West and Solito. Note: slow and quiet, with scenes of bodies from a rescue.
Where to watch: Free on Kanopy and Hoopla; Kino Film Collection; rent $2.99-3.99 on Amazon, Apple TV and Fandango At Home (JustWatch US, Oct 28 2026)Letterboxd ↗
