The Motorcycle Diaries(2004)
dir. Walter Salles
A road trip that radicalized a continent's conscience.
Where to watch: Rent/buy: Apple TV, AmazonLetterboxd ↗
In 1952, a young medical student named Ernesto Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado ride a motorcycle across South America, encountering poverty and labor exploitation that reshape Ernesto's sense of the continent and his place in it. Adapted from Guevara's own travel memoir.
Why it’s here
Punk in letting privilege dissolve on contact with real poverty — young Ernesto doesn't arrive already radical, he becomes so by watching and listening. Pedagogical in showing solidarity as something built through proximity and discomfort, not proclaimed from a podium.
