In this retelling of a Zambian folktale, the colorful birds of Africa ask the Blackbird to share a little of his beautiful black color — to touch their wings and bodies with his shade. Blackbird shares freely, adding rings and patches and touches of black, reminding everyone that beauty comes from inside. Bryan — a beloved African American artist and author — renders the story in cut-paper collage of extraordinary richness and vibrancy. The picture book that celebrates Blackness as beauty through the oldest possible form: a story told by the people it belongs to, in colors that sing.
