Based on the true story of Jaime Escalante, who in the early 1980s taught calculus at Garfield High in East Los Angeles and pushed a class of kids the school had written off toward the AP exam. When they pass, the testing board suspects cheating and demands a retake. Edward James Olmos earned an Oscar nomination for playing him.

Why it’s here

A teacher refuses the school's verdict on a classroom of East LA kids, and the film makes the cost of that refusal visible: a system that assumes Latino students can't do calculus, then accuses them of cheating when they do. What's punk is that expectation is the battleground, not the budget. What's pedagogical is the method on screen: absurdly high demands, Saturday mornings, and kids who learn the math because someone treats them as people who can. Watch for how the exam board's suspicion is the real plot.
